The Greatest "New Yorker" Cartoon Of All Time Apr. 2nd, 2008 @ 12:36 pm
Carole and I love this cartoon and quote it to each other routinely. It's by the legendary cartoonist George Booth

Why We Dream Jan. 3rd, 2008 @ 11:24 am
Here's a link to an article from Psychology Today that may explain why we dream. If the researcher is right, our brain needs dream time to go over all the survival mechanisms we rely on to get through life and not get eaten by sabertooth tigers and stuff. There's more to it than that -- but that's a big chunk of it. Take a look.

Adoption Nov. 22nd, 2007 @ 07:17 pm
One of the more interesting articles I've read lately:

An article by a Los Angeles Times investigative reporter who decided to put his skills to use investigating his own story, namely, who his parents were and why they put him up for adoption. This one comes out a bit more interesting than most such stories seem to.

I suspect that if I found out that I'd been adopted, I'd be curious to the point of mania about finding out why/who/how.

My eldest sister was adopted and she eventually found out her story -- her mother, suffering from schizophrenia or manic depression, got pregnant when she was definitely not able to look out for a new baby, put the child up for adoption, and my parents adopted her. Fifteen or sixteen years later, my sister found out that her birth mother's mental illnesses were very, very hereditary. :(

Anyway. It's an interesting article. Give it a read.
