Princess Cays Island May. 12th, 2008 @ 12:00 pm

Thank you smochies for the welcome!

Princess Cays is a place I want to share with everyone. If you haven't been you should go at some point in your lifetime.
I recently visited Princess Cays Island w/ my sister. A private island accessible through Princess Cruises.
This place is so beautiful I can't wait to go back again.
Snorkeling, Glass-Bottom rafting, beach-side barbecue, Native music and so much more. Very family friendly.

I found that there is very little information online for Princess Cays so I decided to start my own website! I gathered up as much information as I could find and posted the information I have from when I visited.
If anyone has visited this island and would like to share photos or information I would greatly appreciate it.
I will give a link to your Flickr account or whichever Image hosting website you use.

Another Weeknight Dinner Shot to Hell May. 11th, 2008 @ 02:12 pm
[info]eat_joe

Ok, so it's not really that bad, but does anyone have any positive experiences to relate with respect to Marcella Hazan's Essentials of Classic Italian Cooking?  I've heard both her cookbook and her referred to positively by a number of people, including Julia.  But I've never made anything out of that particular cookbook that was any more than good.  Several times I've had what I would describe as either mediocre meals or just plain disasters.  The most recent disaster was the polenta cake out of her dessert section, which refused to rise.  I wouldn't have expected it to rise, given what was in it, but I made it anyway, and it was flat as a pancake.  I can't figure out if I'm just executing things poorly or if some recipes are just flat wrong.  But it's hard to believe the errors are on her side, as (again) I've seen so many people with positive opinions on her and the cookbook.

Any of you folks have any opinions in either direction?

The Street Has Its Own Uses For Things May. 11th, 2008 @ 03:03 pm
[info]st_rev
Unable to afford a proper camera crew and equipment, The Get Out Clause, an unsigned band from the city, decided to make use of the cameras seen all over British streets.

With an estimated 13 million CCTV cameras in Britain, suitable locations were not hard to come by.

They set up their equipment, drum kit and all, in eighty locations around Manchester – including on a bus – and proceeded to play to the cameras.

Afterwards they wrote to the companies or organisations involved and asked for the footage under the Freedom of Information Act.

I think my youngest daughter broke one (or two) of my toes yesterday.

She jumped on my foot, while I was wearing stupidly, vain, very much not responsible, but cute slide on clog type, with a thickish type sole, sandals yesterday. She came down squarely on my toes. All 50some pounds of her. Nearly brought me to tears, definitely took my breath away, and left me whimpering and hopping about on one foot for a few minutes, while I caught my breath, and kept trying not to cry in pain. I limped the rest of the day, thinking that by today, I'd be fine. Yeah, right. I am still in pain, and hobbling about, and definitely not wanting to put shoes on, at all, of any sort. And, I need to go grocery shopping. With the kids in tow. Because the husband has a funeral detail to attend to, down in Manteo, NC.

*sigh*

And, tomorrow is Mother's Day.

But, I got two presents, all wrapped up in pretty, hand decorated wrapping paper, made by the older daughter at Girl Scouts. (I know what they are, but I don't know what they look like) I get to open them tomorrow. Probably all I'll get for Mother's Day, besides getting taken to dinner, but it's the thought that counts, and hand made presents by children are always full of love and intent and feeling, so those are the best kinds to get, right? No matter how much we might secretly want sparkly pretties or spa days, or new computer stuff, or similar materialistic goodies, from the husband.

If you have any dive info, stories, advice, recomendations, etc, I would love to hear about it!

Also I remember hearing about whale shark dives being done here and obviously would love to do that, but i guess that all depends on when they're their and the cost.

Anyway, I'm off to do some googling...

Pop's Backdoor Pizza Menu May. 11th, 2008 @ 03:52 pm
[info]eat_joe

If you haven't heard already, Pop's has a new pizza takeout and delivery service.  They've always had takeout for the restaurant menu, but now they have a separate, additional menu for takeout and delivery.  And it's not just pizza: calzoni, salads, appetizers, antipasti, desserts....  But the best part: beer and wine by delivery.  Woo-hoo!  Ok, maybe that's not the best part, but it's pretty damn good.  :)

I've been trying to get something up about this for maybe a week.  The gods have not been helpful in this regard.  :(  So, in order to facilitate things, below is the pizza menu; I'll be writing up my actual experience there later.  For the moment, I'll just say that I'm really happy, as I've always been with Pop's.  I'm glad to have another way to eat their food.  :)

One of the reasons I wanted to do this as soon as I saw the menu was that I wanted to hyperlink some of the ingredients.  I'll add that in over time.  I'm also not intending to reproduce the current menu exactly: like I said, I want to add some stuff.  But Kevin over at BCR has a PDF up if you'd like to see exactly how the initial public menu looked.  BTW, Kevin mentions that the pizzas and calzoni are wood fired:  While Pop's uses a wood-fired oven in the restaurant, the new pizza operation has a new, separate pizza oven (I imagine for both quantity and space reasons).  Besides, if you ever go look at Pop's' wood oven, you'll notice that probably couldn't get an 18-inch pizza in and out of the thing.  :)  However, they do say they will wood-fire the 10" pizzas and calzones on request.

To call in an order, call 956-7437 (956-PIES).  Hours: 5 pm to 10 pm(ish) Sunday through Thursday, and 5 pm to 11 pm(ish) Friday and Saturday.  Have it delivered, or save a buck fifty and pick up your order at their back door, where they have a neat new counter installed (more on that space later, but it's off the parking lot between Pop's and Parker & Otis).

A terminal "(V)" below means the pizza in question is vegetarian.  The pizzas below are $10 for the 10 inch, $15 for the 14 inch, and $19 for the 18 inch.

  1. Number One: granny smith apples, brie, white truffle oil on ricotta spread (V)
  2. Irish Pie: sliced potatoes, crispy pancetta, garlicky spinach
  3. Pepperoni: housemade sausage, fresh mozzarella, parmesan cheese
  4. Pop's Famous Salty Egg and Prosciutto: prosciutto, roasted garlic, kalamata olives
  5. Pizza Margherita: roma tomatoes, basil leaves, fresh mozzarella (V)
  6. White Pizza: taleggio, fresh mozzarella, parmesan, garlic on ricotta spread (V)
  7. Kitchen Pie: sopressata, fresh tomatoes, capers, jalapeños, light cheese, marinated cabbage
  8. Polpette: housemade meatballs, broccoli rabe, roasted garlic, parmesan
  9. Valtellina: bresaola, wilted arugula, caramelized onions, pecorino romano
  10. Ratatouille: grilled zucchini, grilled eggplant, sweet onions, roasted tomatoes, black olives, feta (V)
  11. House-Smoked Chicken: fontina, grilled red onions on pesto
  12. Carolina: NC shrimp, roasted red peppers, onions, bacon
  13. Northerner: shortribs, herb-roasted mushrooms, taleggio, white truffle oil
  14. Southerner: ham, grilled red onion, oil-cured tomato
  15. Hawaiian: ham, andouille, pineapple, cherry peppers
  16. Meat Lovers: pepperoni, bacon, shortribs, soppressata
  17. Veggie Lovers: artichokes, roma tomatoes, onions, peppers, mushrooms, green olives (V)
  18. Tomato Lovers: fresh romas, roasted tomatoes, oil-cured tomatoes, garlic, parmesan on pesto base (V)
  19. Mushroom Lovers: herb-roasted shiitake, portobello, and button mushrooms, pecorino romano (V)

Need a Technical Term II May. 8th, 2008 @ 08:39 pm
[info]st_rev
Partial answer thanks to [info]admnaismith:
Buridan's Ass: a hypothetical donkey postulated by the French philosopher Jacques Buridan. It was said that, if placed midway between two identical piles of feed, the donkey would starve to death through not having a basis for choosing one pile instead of the other.
This doesn't quite work to describe the kinds of things I had in mind--Buridan's ass seems mainly to be about a particular kind of metastable equilibrium--but that just means I have to think about them some more and tighten up my thoughts.

An example of what I had in mind would be languages. A society/community/group needs one if it is to function, but there's little that makes one human language superior to another for general use, and the choice is nearly always contingent on historical circumstances. However, there are significant overhead costs to trying to support more than one.

... May. 8th, 2008 @ 09:44 am
[info]fs_feed

I really don't know WTF to say about these, but please go look.  If you can read any of the languages involved (one of which appears to be Russian; the others Asian of some sort?), I'd really appreciate any glosses you could provide.

If you chase down some of the links, there are more drawings reconceptualized as drawings instead of photographs.

Sometimes I wake up in the morning with a song going through my head.  No big deal, right?  I'm sure that happens to lots of people.  Sometimes the song goes away; sometimes I go find the actual song and listen to it; most cases are somewhere in the middle.

A year or two ago, I realized that sometimes the song or tune going through my head didn't actually exist in the outside world: it was something I'd apparently made up in my sleep.  I thought of trying to write them all down, but never did it.

This morning, the one going through my head is odd.  It kept catching my attention, and seemed familiar, but I couldn't place it.  I just now realized that it's a mash-up of the lyrics from Billy Joel's "The Entertainer" with music from some damn church hymn I was subjected to over 30 years ago.

A few weeks ago, I realized just how oblivious my young friend, Jo, really is.

For whatever reason, he had drawn all over his arms with pen, and when he saw me, he very enthusiastically showed them off to me.

Much to my horror and disbelief, he had drawn a few swastikas as well.

Me: Jo! You have swastikas on your arm!

Friend: Yeah, aren't they cool?

Me: No, those are Nazi symbols.

Friend: Yeah, I know! Nazis are cool!

Me: -blinks- ...No, Nazis are not cool. Nazis killed thousands of Jews (under exaggerated) and minorities. In fact, I believe they're still around as a white supremacist group.

Friend: So what?

Me: Jo, YOU'RE BLACK!

He still didn't get it. My soul died a little more that day.

Hello everyone. This is my first post and I thought I'd start with a particularly disturbing incident that occurred within the family several months ago.

Me: *reading a magazine in the living room while uncle watches CNN*
Uncle: *watching some news report on newly recovered dinosaur bones* That's bullshit.
Me: What is?
Uncle: Dinosaurs.
Me:...what do you mean?
Uncle: There were no dinosaurs. I don't believe in them.
Me: (WTF)...but they have dinosaur bones. And whole dinosaur skeletons in museums.
Uncle: They're not real.
Me: WHAT?
Uncle: These people-- *gestures to the paleontologists*--they put them in the ground. Then they dig them up.
Me: Why would they do that??
Uncle: Publicity.

And on a related incident, weeks later--

Uncle: *watching one of Discovery Channel's ANIMATED dinosaur documentaries--points to an obviously digital dinosaur* See? It's bullshit! That's not even real!
Me: *facepalms*

(I wish I could say I was joking. He still doesn't believe dinosaurs are real.)

Me: OK. What's the reason for the return?
RC: The grill won't turn on.

RC: Yes.
Me: It's a charcoal grill. It needs to be lit with a match or a lighter.
RC: Yeah, I know.
Me: *pause* But the grill won't TURN ON?
RC: Yes.
Me: There's no other way to turn it on other than to light it.
RC: Right.
Me: Soooo....how can it not turn on if it's done with a match or lighter? It's done manually.
RC: Right, I know...oh. Wait. Yeah, I guess it's a user error thing, huh?

Okay, first some background info:
I am a seventeen-year-old girl living in the United States (New York, to be precise). Everyone in the following situation is my age or older, and are ALSO citizens of the US.

I'm at a dinner at my friend's house, with another mutual friend of ours, and all of our immediate family. We're covering the topics you'd expect- "How is school?" "SATs" "summer plans", etc. My friend (let's call her Hannah) mentions that she's going to California over the summer. Our other friend (let's call her Jane)'s response?

"You know, I just figured out the other day that California was part of the US. All this time I've been thinking you were leaving the country when you said you were going to California."

There's a beat of silence, during which several politically incorrect jokes rush to the forefront of my brain, and are pushed out by the sheer "WTF-ery" of that statement. Hannah laughs feebly, then asks awkwardly, with an undercurrent of dread, if Jane is joking. Jane is not joking. Jane's parents (wtf, parents?) quickly switch the topic to "Say, what books do you kids enjoy these days?" Clearly not world almanacs.
